Hear and Do
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
(James 1)
What is the implanted word we are to receive, hear? The Bible.
We are to be quick to hear and slow to speak.
How many ears do we have? Two.
How many mouths do we have? One.
Maybe God intended us to listen twice as much as we speak...
What are we supposed to do after we hear? DO. Yes, act on what we hear, read, and learn from God's word.
Let's see what Jesus has to say about this...
46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
(Luke 6)
So if we listen and do, what are we like? The house on a firm foundation.
When trials or struggles or tests crash against us we will be able to stand firm in our faith.
But what if we listen but do not do? We fall.
When we face trials or struggles or tests we may not be able to stand up under them.
So today, let's do. Let's act on our faith. Love one another and listen to each other and your teachers.
