Bible Challenge 2009 - Week 20

Knights and Ladies,

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
Mark 14:38

“The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

How often do I know what needs to be done, but I don’t do it? Or, how often do I know what I shouldn’t do and still do it any way?

Jesus warns us to watch His example and pray, so that by abiding in the Holy Spirit, we can overcome temptation. It is another reminder that we can not do it alone, we must be in Christ and He in us. It is only by God that we are transformed!

“See how the sinful weakness of Christ's disciples returns, and overpowers them. What heavy clogs these bodies of ours are to our souls! But when we see trouble at the door, we should get ready for it. Alas, even believers often look at the Redeemer's sufferings in a drowsy manner, and instead of being ready to die with Christ, they are not even prepared to watch with him one hour.”
(Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on the Bible)

“We should view holiness and obedience to God from the perspective of our relationship with Christ, and from the perspective that we are being built up in Christ as we take in more and more of him. This approach will lead to our overcoming the flesh, self, sin and the world, but it will not be done by direct confrontation (even though we will still encounter opposition while obeying). Our own capacity will be replaced by the capacity of the Holy Spirit, and our own talents, strengths, emotions and frailties will be modulated, amplified, moderated or redirected by the indwelling Spirit. This is what Paul meant when he talked of ‘Christ [being] formed in’ the Galatians (Galatians 4:19).”

Accept the challenge, take the quest!

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
