Bible Challenge 2009 - Week 6

Knights and Ladies,

He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.' You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men."
Mark 7:6-8

Tradition vs. Transformation!

The Jewish leaders and teachers of the law were overly focused on outward rituals and traditions. (Mark 7:1-5)

Jesus corrects them about what God is most concerned about, a transformation of the heart! (Mark 7:6-23)

In one sense our faith is easy, we don’t have to memorize a list of religious rules and traditions! On the other hand, what God really wants is our hearts. He wants what is on the inside. For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.' (Mark 7:21-23)

Submitting your heart in obedience to God is how we allow Him to truly transform us! I give you my heart, O God, transform it for Your glory!

“Those clean hands and that pure heart which Christ bestows on his disciples, and requires of them, are very different from the outward and superstitious forms of Pharisees of every age. Jesus reproves them for rejecting the commandment of God.” (Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary on the Bible)

“It is always best to drink at the well and not from the tank. You shall find that reading the Word of God for yourselves, reading it rather than notes upon it, is the surest way of growing in grace. Drink of the unadulterated milk of the Word of God, and not of the skim milk, or the milk and water of man's word." ("How to Read the Bible" a sermon by C. H. Spurgeon)

Accept the challenge, take the quest!

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
(2 Timothy 3:16-17)
