Kudos: Peoria Leaders’ Request to Heart of Illinois United Way

Several Christian leaders in the Peoria area have signed a letter requesting that the Heart of Illinois United Way reconsider their support of the “destructive agency” Planned Parenthood.

Rev. James McDonald notes, “While United Way helps many needed charities, our local chapter also gives to Planned Parenthood. . . [and now that our local Planned Parenthood] agency is a statewide organization, even our local office is participating in the activities of Planned Parenthood statewide, which includes the operation of large abortion clinics in Aurora, Champaign, and Chicago.” (IFI)

The letter notes that “Planned Parenthood is not an agency that advocates strong families or communities. Its open support of the abhorrent practice of abortion on demand is destroying life and harming women. Its educational approach, which encourages sexual activity outside of marriage (even for children), damages the central fabric of our society – strong families.”

Kudos to these leaders of the faith!

I challenge everyone to consider how their charitable gifts are used. As Rev. McDonald exhorts, “I encourage you to end your support of any organization that gives monies to the cause of darkness. Should a Christian support any organization or any candidate who endorses this modern-day holocaust?”

Cry Out America! - Coming Sept. 11 2008

Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD. Joel 1:14

On September 11, 2008 our nation will pause to remember the greatest "wake-up" call in our generation, the terrorist attacks on 9/11/01. As part of Awakening America, a call is being issued for Christians across the nation to mark this significant day in our history with powerful prayer for America and the lost individuals of this country. In every one of the 3141 counties in the United States, during the noon lunch hour on September 11, Christians will unite around their county courthouse to cry out to God with focused prayer for their community, their lost friends and family, and for the spiritual condition of our nation.

Call To Action:

Weekly ReCap – 06-27-2008 – Independence Day Reflections

A few thoughts from the founders:

“[T]he religion which has introduced civil liberty is the religion of Christ and His apostles… This is genuine Christianity and to this we owe our free constitutions of government.” Noah Webster

“[T]o the free and universal reading of the Bible… men [are] much indebted for right views of civil liberty.” Daniel Webster

“While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian.” George Washington

“I desire to bless and praise the name of God most high for appointing me my birth in a land of Gospel Light where the glorious tidings of a Savior and of pardon and salvation through Him have been continually sounding in mine ears.” Robert Treat Paine

“To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom and political and social happiness which mankind now enjoys. All efforts made to destroy the foundations of our Holy Religion ultimately tend to the subversion also of our political freedom and happiness. In proportion as the genuine effects of Christianity are diminished in any nation… in the same proportion will the people of that nation recede from the blessings of genuine freedom… Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government – and all the blessings which flow from them – must fall with them.” Jedidiah Morse, Historian of the American Revolution

“Second Lieutenant Philip D. Palmer of the United States Marine Corps was assigned to a Military Transition Team working with the 1st battalion of the Iraqi Army during operations in the Ma'Laab district in Ramadi, Iraq. . . Standing like a monolith in the face of incoming enemy fire, Palmer took command of the broken unit, rallying them through his bold example. Taking point, he pushed forward towards the attacking insurgents with his newly inspired Iraqi unit who followed close through the chaotic streets. . . 2nd Lt. Palmer's heroic assumption of command and leadership under intense attack earned him the Army Commendation Medal with Valor.” Read on. . .

Politics

- “The ‘Theocracy’ Argument, Part III” Truth Observed, Dr. Del Tackett, 6/18/2008
“The question before us is whether or not the Biblical Christian worldview drives us to pursue a ‘theocracy’. Obviously, much of the answer lies in how one defines exactly what ‘theocracy’ means, and that is why it is important to get all who are involved in the discussion to come to some agreement on the definition. . . So, to answer our question, biblical Christianity does not pursue a ‘theocracy’, but a governmental form in which we recognize that God has delegated ruling authority to a human agency—an agency that is to righteously punish evil and condone good—ruling based upon the transcendent ethical standards of God and not his own.” Read on. . .

- “Exclusive: Can Our Nation Afford Mesmerizing Promises of Hope and Change?” by Renee Taylor, Family Security Matters, June 23, 2008
“As we face the upcoming presidential election, we have a charismatic, mesmerizing candidate who has promised ‘hope’ and ‘change’ to a bloc of voters so numbed by years of socialist indoctrination in our school system that they cannot see the disaster that is bearing down at a lightening fast pace. . . Without the slightest understanding of basic economics and government, they remain glued to the stage, weeping, as their ‘savior’ promises empty words – ‘hope and change’. . . Proverbs 12:11 states: ‘He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding.’ Will [we] till our own land - use our vast energy resources, grow food to feed our families and take pride in our hard work and efforts? Or will we blindly follow vain, narcissistic politicians with mesmerizing, empty promises of ‘hope’ and ‘change’?” Read on. . .

Bible Challenge 2008 - Week 13

Week 13

“I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God.” (Luke 12:8)

It is sometimes hard for me to imagine what it would be like to be given the choice: deny Jesus Christ and live, do not and you die.

But the cold hard reality is that it still happens to many faithful every day around the world. Like in Pakistan on June 21, 2008, “. . . 16 Christian men were held captive for an hour. ‘They were beaten and abused, and had all their money and mobile phones stolen from them. During this time, the Taliban attempted to persuade Pastor Zulifqar to convert to Islam, which he unquestionably refused. After sunset the Taliban took them to another place where they were kept in a cave until their release 10 hours later,’ VOM contacts reported.” (1)

Take Heart! As Matthew Henry notes, “A firm belief of the doctrine of God's universal providence, and the extent of it, would satisfy us when in peril, and encourage us to trust God in the way of duty. . . Those who confess Christ now, shall be owned by him in the great day, before the angels of God.” (2)

Monday --- Luke 17
Tuesday --- Luke 18
Wednesday --- Luke 19
Thursday --- Luke 20
Friday --- Luke 21

“Saturninus told Speratus that he still might regain his freedom. ‘Swear by the genius of our Lord the Emperor.’

Speratus thought of Paul’s admonition to Timothy and paraphrased it in reply. ‘I cannot worship the empire of this world,’ he said, ‘but rather I serve that God, whom no man has seen, nor with these eyes can see. I know my Lord, the King of Kings and Emperor of all nations.’

‘Do you truly believe this?’ Saturninus asked the others. ‘Don’t you understand it means your deaths?’

Cittinus said, ‘We fear nothing and no one, except our Lord God, who is in heaven. . . ’

‘These men and women,’ Saturninus declared, ‘having confessed that they live according to the Christian rite, and having obstinately refused the opportunity to return to the traditions of Rome, are to be put to the sword.’

The Christians of Scillium responded, ‘Thanks be to God.’

The fame of the Scillium martyrs, as they came to be known, spread throughout the empire. No doubt the letters of Paul that Speratus was carrying were burned, but the Scillitan martyrs are remembered for their absolute trust in the Word of God.”
(“The Faith: Given Once, For All: What Christians Believe, Why They Believe It, and Why It Matters” by Charles Colson, Harold Fickett)

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

A Fourth of July Message

A Fourth of July message from David Barton of WallBuilders:

June 20, 2008

The Fourth of July is quickly approaching and America will set another world record for longevity, having passed 232 years under the same governing document! While other nations average a revolution every twenty or thirty years, America continues to remain stable. Neither our closest allies nor our fiercest enemies have experienced the stability with which we have been blessed.

Some describe this accomplishment as "American Exceptionalism" -- a term coined in 1831 by Alexis De Tocqueville, a famous French visitor to America who declared:

The position of the Americans is quite exceptional, and it may be believed that no democratic people will ever be placed in a similar one.

This description is not an indication of American superiority; on the contrary, as President John Adams observed, it should always be a source of national humility:

It must be felt that there is no national security but in the nation's humble acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling Providence.

American Exceptionalism is the result not only of distinctive ideas set forth in the Declaration and secured in the Constitution but it is especially the result of the blessing of God -- a fact recognized and acknowledged from generation to generation:

. . . recommend a general and public return of praise and thanksgiving to Him from whose goodness these blessings descend. The most effectual means of securing the continuance of our civil and religious liberties, is always to remember with reverence and gratitude the source from which they flow. FOUNDING FATHER JOHN JAY

America! America! God shed His grace on thee! KATHERINE LEE BATES

May the heaven rescued land praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. . . . And this be our motto: In God is our trust! FRANCIS SCOTT KEY

The account surrounding Francis Scott Key's writing of the Star-Spangled Banner is a fascinating story. We have just recorded a 7-minute video of that inspiring narrative and thought you might enjoy seeing it. You can
click here to view that short video, or click here to purchase and either download it as a media file or request it as a DVD that can be shown at your church or any other group as part of this year's Fourth of July celebration. Enjoy!

God bless!

Wisconsin Disaster Response Trip – June 2008

What a fantastic trip.

The people in Wisconsin were hit hard. There are many displaced and discouraged families.

But I was overwhelmed by how many of God’s people were there helping in the recovery efforts! I worked on a crew of about 15 people (1 crew of many!) on Saturday in small town outside of Reedsburg. Our crew was assigned to “mud out” houses that had been flooded. There were 5 locals from Reedsburg, 2 two people from Madison WI, myself from Peoria IL, and the rest were from a Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Team from Texas. { Pictures Here }

The house I was working in was semi-fortunate in that the first floor was raised by about five steps and the flood water only made it to within 3 or 4 inches of the basement ceiling/main floor (or a couple feet above my head when standing in the basement). Many others were not as fortunate. In the picture with the lady in the dust mask and grey t-shirt, if you look close at the white house behind her you can see the dirty high water mark that reaches about six inches above the basement window.

Check out the pictures, and contact me if you are interested in taking part in a DiRT Trip in the future. There will be crews in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois for some time, so there will be opportunity. Come show your neighbor what love is all about.

Because of the love God showed for us by sending His son to take our punishment, giving us new life, we are to share that love by feeding the hungry, by giving drink to the thirsty, by providing shelter for the displaced, by sharing clothing to those without, and by visiting and caring for the sick and injured (Matthew 25:31-40), and Christ’s love was evident in Wisconsin!

I pray that God would strengthen the Disaster Response volunteers. I pray for the families and individuals that are struggling with the overwhelming sense of loss, that they would put there trust in the Lord, recover, and move forward. I also pray for my host family, Bill and Dian, and for the High Point Church DiRT and leadership. I pray that God would be glorified and that all would look to Him in times of sorrow and joy. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.

Weekly ReCap – 06-20-2008 – Family Preparedness

Are You Ready?

It is very important that families are prepared for the worst. If there is anything good to learn out of the recent storms and floods in the Midwest, it is how the strong and prepared families and communities have minimized the damage, loss of life, and recovery from disaster.

“. . . The family is the building block of human society, the social unit on which the existence and strength of the people first depends. . . Weaken the family, and you weaken the society of the people.” – Dr. Alan Keyes (“Church and family: scapegoats for the welfare state? Part 12 of ‘The Crisis of the Republic’” August 26,2007)

Strong Families make for a Strong Community and Nation!

I will be visiting High Point Church in Wisconsin this weekend to join their DiRT (Disaster Response Team) in a project. I’ve been given approval from my local church’s missions team, Richwoods Christian Church, to explore the operations of a disaster response team in order to possibly duplicate the ministry locally.

As noted on my DiRT webpage, I also hope to bring the training and awareness into the community to encourage prepared and Godly families here at home. I am currently developing Disaster Preparedness presentations and am still on target to offer them in September (National Preparedness month) of this year.

I need your help!

I would like to offer the classes for free to the community to encourage family preparedness, break the cycle of dependence, and earn the right to share the eternal disaster insurance policy of Jesus Christ. Could you help me acquire training aids, printing, and promotional materials?

Make a secure and anonymous in kind donation through Amazon.com, or Contact me if there is another way you can help (sponsorship, equipment donations, etc…).

- “Over 800,000 Christians Hurdle Divisions to be ‘One’ Church” by Lillian Kwon, Christian Post, June 16, 2008
“The view that many nonbelievers hold of the Church is not very high and many describe the Church as divided rather than united, as one innovative pastor found. . . Early this month, the Life Church pastor launched a month-long series called ‘One Prayer,’ partnering with over 1,400 churches from across the globe in what participants are calling an unprecedented and historic event. The hundreds of churches and their over 800,000 attendants are simultaneously running the series on the premise ‘If God would answer 'one prayer' for the church at large, what would you pray?’. . . ‘What would happen if we the Church across the world united and took all the resources that God has given us?’ he asked. Within a week, he demonstrated, starvation could be eliminated, every person could have access to drinking water, poverty could be eradicated, and the world ‘could not only know the name of Jesus, but they could see him if we became one.’” Read on. . .

Bible Challenge 2008 - Week 12

Week 12

"But what about you?" [Jesus] asked. "Who do you say I am?"
Peter answered, "The Christ of God." (Luke 9:20)

Jesus was not just a wise teacher or healer. Even King Herod was “perplexed!” Jesus was the talk of the region. His miracles and teachings were making headline news! The people thought that maybe he was John the Baptist returned from the dead, which really confused Herod since he had John beheaded, and still others thought that maybe Jesus was the great prophet Elijah. (Luke 9:7-9) Even the elemental forces of nature were under Jesus’ command! (Luke 8:22-25)

What is our response when we come to realize we are in the presence of God? Jesus Christ the Son of God, one of the three persons of the One True God?

It drove me to me knees, I was gripped by fear like the people of Gerasene! (Luke 8:26-37) This is life altering, life transforming, and life giving!

It is still a fearful thing to sit at His feet reading His Word. How great a gift a Heavenly Father can give His children.

Monday --- Luke 12
Tuesday --- Luke 13
Wednesday --- Luke 14
Thursday --- Luke 15
Friday --- Luke 16

“More than 200 flood legends have been found in cultures all over the world. The legends are so numerous and from such diverse cultures that they could not have been simply copied from each other. Furthermore, the legends were recorded long before missionaries brought any knowledge of the biblical account of the flood to these cultures. (The account is preserved accurately in Genesis 6-9.)

James Perloff makes some startling comparisons: In 95 percent of the more than 200 flood legends, the flood was worldwide; in 88 percent a certain family was chosen to survive; in 70 percent survival was by means of a boat or raft; in 67 percent animals were also saved; in 66 percent the flood was due to human sin and wickedness; and in 57 percent the boat came to rest on a mountain.”
(“Amazing Discoveries That Unlock the Bible: A Visual Experience (Zondervan Visual Reference Series)” by Douglas Connelly)

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Healing, hope, and restoration for our courageous troops by Marie Jon

Guest Columnist:

Marie Jon' column
Healing, hope, and restoration for our courageous troops

Marie Jon'
Marie Jon'
June 16, 2008

"From the start, I knew I'd get better. — I always knew that it was a part of God's plan. God's been very faithful to me even though I don't deserve it." — U.S. Marine Cpl. Aaron P. Mankin

Physicians and nurses are a part of the surgical teams that bring our troops hope and healing. They are proud to serve awesomely brave men and women of America's armed services who fight the war against terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. With skilled, trained hands they help our wounded warriors heal both physically and emotionally. Dedicated medical teams with heart and soul provide our troops a faster return to a well and productive life. They help improve the quality of life of our injured service men and women.

The Department of Defense created the federally-funded Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM.) Many of the doctors are board-certified plastic surgeons by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). They hold to the very highest of standards in their field.

The ASPS was established in 1931. It is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world. To qualify for membership, a physician must have at least six years of surgical training, including three years in plastic surgery. Other specialties participating in AFIRM include general surgery, orthopedic, otolaryngology, and dermatology. There are special departments that offer therapy and the latest in prosthetics. The medical staff and therapists inspire their patients. In return, the patients provide an emotional uplift to the care providers. Our recuperating troops are amazing and courageous people with unquestionably remarkable fortitude and strength.

"The war has inspired great advances in plastic surgery to correct the awful injuries that are inflicted on its participants. In fact, it was the war to end all wars — World War I that challenged plastic surgeons to achieve groundbreaking advances in wound repair and reconstruction. With this latest conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, plastic surgery, once again, is integral to saving and restoring soldiers' lives." — Dr. Richard D'Amico, ASPS board-certified plastic surgeon.

A generous grant of $85 million has been awarded to help provide the best care for our American heroes. AFIRM is directed and funded by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command, with additional funding from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, the National Institutes of Health, and the Veterans Administration. Statistics come from the Department of Defense indicate that approximately 29,800 troops had been wounded in action in the Iraq war, and another 1,927 in Afghanistan operations this year.

All the medical procedures that are used on our troops are subsequently adapted to meet the needs of the general public, including reconstructive plastic surgery techniques. Burn and trauma patients will benefit from the latest innovations brought to light through the need to heal the wounded combat service people.

UCLA Medical Center has established a new program, Operation Mend. The very first participant in Operation Mend is U.S. Marine Cpl. Aaron P. Mankin. Aaron has a way to go before he is fully restored, being still in need of a series of facial reconstructive surgeries. He was injured in Iraq in May of 2005 when an explosive device burned more than 25% of his body, including severe damage to his face. Forty-eight hours elapsed after the explosion before help and hope arrived.

It has been no walk in the park for Marine Cpl. Aaron P. Mankin. He has undergone two-and-a-half years of multiple surgeries, including many skin grafts. May God bless the outstanding medical team led by Timothy Miller, chief of plastic surgery at UCLA Medical Center. It is Dr. Miller's trained hands that began the process of reconstructing Aaron's face.

Excepts from The Morning News Front: Injured Marine Returns for the Holidays — 2005

"ROGERS — He watched as the helicopter's rotors circled above him. Told to keep his eyes open, Aaron Mankin gazed up as he lay on a cot in the bottom rack of a military helicopter in a place far from his Rogers home.

"He remembers raising his left hand, staring at the blister, noting the skin had peeled back. Mankin knew he'd been burned and he knew he was in pain, but didn't comprehend the severity of his wounds as he noticed the beauty of the puffy white clouds against a bright blue sky above the Iraqi desert on May 11.

"U.S. Marine Cpl. Aaron P. Mankin, a 2000 graduate of Rogers High School, was riding atop the military transport vehicle when the 26-ton vehicle hit a mine that day. It was tossed straight up and slammed down on the hard sand road with its load of Marines, ammunition and other supplies.

"Mankin remembers falling in through the hatch, watching as debris crashed around him, flames flared and the hatch closed above. Emergency equipment in the vehicle apparently malfunctioned. Fire control devices didn't go off and a rear ramp wouldn't open. Marines were able to open a side door, but by then the ammunition had started to cook and began to go off.

"Amid the chaos, Mankin found his way out. He recalled those first-grade lessons of 'stop, drop and roll,' and the 23-year-old rolled and rolled in the sand, stopping several times to see if he was still on fire. When he couldn't roll anymore, his fellow Marines came to his rescue. He heard someone yell, 'Put him out, put him out.'

"Aaron Mankin supports the effort in Iraq and is proud of the freedom that the United States has helped bring to the Iraqi people, despite his severe injuries and his fear for the safety of his fiancé." Full Article

Aaron and his wife, Marine Lance Cpl. Diana Mankin, and their daughter, Maddie, who is just eight months old, have taken up residency at UCLA Tiverton House while Aaron undergoes surgery. The Katz Family Foundation is paying all non-covered costs, such as travel and housing during treatment.Other soldiers are being scheduled as part of Operation Mend. UCLA is but one of the world-class hospitals that are lending their extraordinary expertise in plastic reconstructive surgery to our magnificent troops.

Americans must come to a place called "Reality." We need to understand that the United States has no other choice but to continue fighting a war we did not ask for. The enemy came to our homeland long before 9/11. Radical Islam has been at war with America for decades, yet we were blindsided by their hatred for us due to our leaders' shortsightedness and subversive influences from within. We are despised because, according to Jihadists, their prophet Mohammad designates non-believers as infidels who are worthy of brutality and death.

We are indeed at war, and it is time to stop second-guessing our president. America took the appropriate stand.

Do not allow the biased media to depress you with their demagoguery. We've all heard the same vitriolic rhetoric ad nauseam. The Democrats are invested in retreat and defeat. We who believe in winning the war in Iraq and stabilizing the Middle East feel confident that John McCain can achieve that goal.

Be proud that you're an American. Our accomplishments in Iraq are honorable and commendable. The president's first job is to protect our country. George Bush acted wisely. We liberated millions of innocent people. There are no more rape rooms in Iraq. Women and children are safer than ever before. Saddam is dead and al-Qaeda has been driven back by Iraq's troops and the Iraqi people. Like the land of Israel, the people of Iraq deserve peace.

Our service men and women will come home after the work we have begun is finished. Our troops will begin to stand down when Afghani and Iraqi troops are able to take care of their newly-formed democracies. Until then, it is their duty to take care of our nation via providing safety in the Middle East. If anyone tells you differently, they are either naïve or treasonous. We are living in a dangerous time and cannot afford to let down our guard again.

Most Americans are ill-informed of the potential attacks that have been thwarted by our Homeland Security intelligence gathering — nineteen planned terrorist attacks against America since that infamous day of September 11, 2001. You can thank this administration for keeping America safe. That will not be the case if the Islamic sympathizer Barack Obama becomes president.

If you have any doubts that what our troops have endured for our freedom has been worthwhile, just look into the eyes of Marine Cpl. Aaron P. Mankin and the thousands of others who joined the Armed Services to protect America. We have more than sufficient justification to feel admiration and love for them and our country. One phenomenal reason to puff up your chest with pride is Aaron Mankin.

Weekly ReCap – 06-13-2008 – Flag Day

Flag Day is this Saturday June 14, 2008

I pledge allegiance to the flag
When we recite the Pledge, we are promising to be faithful to the ideals of our country.

Of the United States of America
The flag symbolizes our fifty states joined in a common bond to fulfill those ideals.

And to the Republic for which it stands,
We elect representatives who govern for a time and are accountable to us for the job they do.

One Nation under God,
Our founders understood that the government does not give us our freedom. Our freedom ultimately comes from God, and our government was established to secure that God-given freedom.

Indivisible,
We pledge ourselves to stay together as a country, even when we disagree.

With liberty and justice for all.
We commit ourselves to such liberties as the freedom to worship, freedom to assemble, and freedom to speak. We also commit ourselves to justice which means being fair and right in our judgment of people.

Anyone with half a brain (which automatically excludes most of the judiciary) wouldn't mess with an institution on whose future the survival of humanity depends. . . When the family lies buried under tons of rubble, perhaps the majority on the California Supreme Court will discover too late that government does indeed have a very compelling interest in preserving authentic marriage. It must be emphasized that marriage between one man and one woman is a God ordained, God defined, biblical act. For 1800 years in western countries, marriage was a unique institution, initiated by God when he created the male and female, presided over by Jesus Christ when he blessed the act of marriage and stated that a man and a woman would leave their parents and join together to become one flesh, and sustained by the Holy Spirit who not only holds the marriage together but also produces the offspring that God creates. . . We need to stand for God’s Law in the face of the power grab by those in civil authority, who know no restraints. California and Massachusetts have not only violated God’s Law, they have also violated their own constitution and the will of the governed. When they do that, they are just like King George. “. . . the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2: 6-7)

The King of all creation comes to His people. . . in a barn and is placed in a feeding trough! It defies all human logic! It just does not make sense by human standards!

This is not a man made story. 2000 plus years after His birth in a barn, Jesus Christ is still the central figure in all the world! Why? Because the eyewitnesses of the time confirmed the story was true and lives are still being transformed today! God sent His one and only begotten Son to save humanity!

“Voltaire is reported to have said that within a hundred years of his day the Bible would be a forgotten book. In a strange twist of irony, within a century of his death, one of his homes in France would belong to the Geneva Bible Society and serve as the place where Bibles were printed and distributed. But at least Voltaire, Sartre, and Nietzsche were honest and consistent in their views. They admitted the ridiculousness of life, the pointlessness of everything in an atheistic world.

Contemporary atheists such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris, however, are so blind to the conceit of their own minds that they try to present this view of life as some sort of triumphal liberation. Sartre, as atheistic intellectual elites know but are embarrassed to acknowledge, denounced atheism on his deathbed as philosophically unlivable. A few years ago, in a debate between atheism and Christianity, Antony Flew described a Christian philosopher's experience of knowing Christ as "grotesque." But Flew has now vacated the atheistic camp, no longer able to honestly justify its metaphysical moorings (see Psalm 14:1-3).”

Raising, Nurturing, and Educating our Children

A Reflection on Raising, Nurturing, and Educating our Children

Reading through the first couple chapters of Luke’s “carefully investigated” and “orderly account” of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, something of recent and local incident came to mind. (Luke 1:1-4)

When Jesus was just 12 years old he was in the Temple Courts “sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.” And we are told that “his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” (Luke 2:46-47, 51-52)

The recent incident that came to mind is the proposal by District 150 to shorten the school day by 45 minutes to help save the budget, and the ensuing public outcry, apparently for the children’s sake.

The primary duty and responsibility to educate children lies with the children’s parents.

Raising, nurturing, and educating children is the parents duty and responsibility!

Public school, private school, and home schooling are just methods of education. The duty and responsibility of education is the parents.

If by choice or necessity you choose public schooling, and that public school fails to fundamentally educate your children (I heard somewhere that America is #1 in the world in spending per student, and #13 in the world in academic performance!), then we as parents have to pick up the slack and fill in the gaps!

Is 45 minutes in a public school setting really that critical? Could you use that extra 45 minutes at home with your children to supplement their public education? Could you use that extra 45 minutes at home with your children to develop your relationship with them and encourage academic performance? Could you use that time to read a book to them, or work through a supplemental (and even character building) lesson with them? Maybe to talk to them about issues of the heart?

I really think this is an issue where we as parents have to stop looking to someone else, outside of our home and family, and start looking in the mirror and asking ourselves, “Am I doing everything I can to ensure the proper raising, nurturing, and educating of my children?”

It is NOT the government’s responsibility to educate our children. It is NOT the public school systems responsibility to educate our children. It IS the public school systems job, but it IS the Parent’s duty and responsibility to educate their children, especially when the primary and sometimes only available method of education is failing.

So, here is a ministry concept for a church or ministry leader:

Outreach to parents that have a need to be equipped, encouraged, and empowered to take more personal responsibility in the education of their children!

God bless, and may all our children grow “in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” (Luke 2:52)

- “Leaving a Godly Legacy” by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Christian Worldview Network
Our children are a sacred stewardship from the Lord. One day we will give account to God for the spiritual condition of the next generation. That does not diminish their responsibility, but we, as adult believers, will one day stand before God and give account for how we built, watched over the city, and fought the battle on behalf of the next generation.” Read on. . .

- “In Praise of Marriage and Parenting” by Chuck Baldwin. June 3, 2008
“. . . it seems to me that far too many people in our country overlook the importance of child rearing. Many seem to feel that just about everything else--job, career, money, "success," etc.--occupies a higher priority than raising honest, God-fearing children. . . Strong, committed, principled parenting has done more to change the course of history, depose despots, promote righteousness, protect virtue, and secure liberty than all of the colleges, corporate boardrooms, and presidential palaces combined. And who knows? At this very moment, mothers and fathers across America could be nurturing and training the next generation of patriots who will rise up and restore the principles of liberty and greatness to our land? I will tell you this: if parents do not do it, no one else can.” Read on. . .

Book Highlight: America's Godly Heritage

Book Highlight: America's Godly Heritage

America's Godly Heritage, by David Barton and Charles Barton, clearly sets forth the beliefs of many famous Founding Fathers concerning the proper role of Christian principles in education, government, and the public affairs of the nation. The beliefs of Founders such as Patrick Henry, John Quincy Adams, John Jay, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and many others are clearly presented. It also provides excerpts from court cases showing that for 160 years under the Constitution, Christian principles were officially and legally inseparable from American public life. For those who want to know more about what was intended for America by the Founders and what can be done to return America to its original guiding philosophy, this book is an excellent primer.

Folding the American Flag

Folding the American Flag

From The Firefighter’s Bible.

At funerals for fire fighters the Honor Guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the American flag 12 times. Here’s what each fold symbolizes:

1. The first fold in our flag is a symbol of life.

2. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.

3. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.

4. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance.

5. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country and the loyalty we owe our country in good times and bad.

6. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with the heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

7. The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all of her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

8. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor Mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day.

9. The ninth fold is in tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

10. The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.

11. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

12. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit.

After the flag is folded completely and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat. This reminds us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the armed forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

The colors presented in our great flag also have meaning. The red stands for hardiness and valor. The white symbolized hope, purity and innocence. The blue stand for reverence to God, loyalty, vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Flag Day - Saturday June 14, 2008

The Star Spangled Banner
By Francis Scott Key, 1814

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming!
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the Heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Weekly ReCap – 06-06-2008 - Disaster Fatigue

The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' (Matthew 25:40)

Unless you live in a cave isolated from the world, you know how devastating and frequent the natural disasters have been recently.

There are new terms being thrown around, “Donor Fatigue” and “Disaster Fatigue.” But I want to encourage you, especially you followers of my DiRT initiative (the Disaster Response Team). Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Disasters should remind us that we are all terminally ill. We suffer from the terminal disease of sin and mortality and do not know when the end will come. But take heart! “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

And those of us living for our eternal destiny, we need to be encouraged and reminded that we are called to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, give shelter to the displaced, give clothing to those without, visit and heal the sick and injured, and share the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ. (Matthew 25:31-40)

The result, it found, is an error rate of one in four. . . The irony of the situation is that when a child is wrongly taken from their home, that is an abusive move against a child by the state. Sadly, the state does not recognize its own abusive ways. . . Nowhere else in our justice or civil system is so much power granted, with so little oversight-- with so much harm done to those they are supposed to help.” Read on. . .

- “Leaving a Godly Legacy” by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, Christian Worldview Network
“Our children are a sacred stewardship from the Lord.

I will tell you this: if parents do not do it, no one else can.” Read on. . .
