Mid-Week Devotional - Luke 6:12

Read: Luke 6:12 - 7:10

Scripture

Luke 6:12

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.” (NIV)

During those days He went out to the mountain to pray and spent all night in prayer to God.” (HCSB)

Observation

Jesus had an important decision to make, which twelve of His disciples would He call to be apostles (v. 6:13).

And how did Jesus prepare for this important decision? He prayed. He prayed all night to God the father.

Application

How do you prepare for important decisions? Do you give your hopes, dreams and ambitions over to God and pray to Him for guidance when you come to a point of making a choice?

I don’t think I have ever spent a whole night in prayer. Maybe I should! How many decisions have I rushed into in my life? Oh boy, way too many!

Let’s practice giving God all of our decisions and praying to Him for guidance. We must still take action based on all of our other faculties, but we must also go before God and ask for His will and His blessing.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus Christ, our High Priest, who intercedes on our behalf. Because of Him we can be assured that you hear our prayers. Lord, help me to put prayer into greater practice as I make important decisions in my life. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.

To Our Presidential Candidates: Why Words Are Important

Why is it such a big deal to use accurate words when describing events and procedures? And why no sane person should ever vote for a presidential candidate that is so morally insane that they would actually support such practices.

Take, for example, these two words used to describe a partial birth abortion: Tissue and Baby.

The first example is a clinically correct description of the procedure, but the word “tissue” is used to deceive the listeners about what is really happening:

“. . . ‘I just gently draw the tissue out attempting to have an intact delivery if possible.’” (qtd. in Massie)

The exact same procedure is described in the same article by “a nurse who witnessed a partial-birth abortion done to a 26-and-a-half week-old unborn child, and testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee:”
Dr. Haskell went in with forceps and grabbed the baby's legs and pulled them down into the birth canal. Then he delivered the baby's body and the arms – everything but the head. The doctor kept the head inside the uterus.
...

"The baby's little fingers were clasping and unclasping, and his little feet were kicking. Then the doctor stuck the scissors in the back of his head, and the baby's arms jerked out, like a startle reaction, like a lurch, like a baby does when he thinks he is going to fall.

The doctor opened up the scissors, stuck a high powered suction tube into the opening and sucked the baby's brains out. Now, the baby went completely limp. ...
Ok, deep breath. I am so sorry to do that to you. If you still have any remnant of soul left in you, then that made your heart ache and your stomach turn! If not, I pray God works a miracle to bring you back from the living dead!

“Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, [Rudy Giuliani] and the rest can lament the court's ruling, but they shouldn't feel too bad – after all, they are still left with abortion.” (Massie)

I urge you, DO NOT support any presidential candidate that supports abortion! Obama even voted against a bill to force doctors to provide aid to a baby that survived an abortion. Just let it die! Sick! Insane! Inhumane! How could anyone support this type of person as the president of the United States?

God forgive us! God, please forgive our inhumanity and motivate your people to teach the value of life.

Tell someone how valuable life truly is today. Share the message that we were created for a purpose. Remember, the Choice is made BEFORE Conception!

God's story continues!

How important is family in the epic story we are living in? That is a rhetorical question. Of course families are the most fundamental aspect of the story! Unfortunately, as in any epic story, there is a dark force at work trying to undermine the forces of good; trying to undermine the value of the family.

Husbands, wives, mothers and fathers, we must take our responsibility seriously! We must continue the legacy and build our families as one of God’s smallest battle formations!

The Warsaw Declaration notes, “The natural family, creation of God, is the fundamental human community, based on the life-long marriage between a man and a woman, in which new individuals are conceived, born and raised.” (Warsaw Declaration, World Congress of Families IV, May 11-13 2007)

    Leaving a Legacy

After leaving over 400 years of slavery and before entering the promised land, Israel took a census of all able bodied warriors (Numbers 1). There were over 600,000 able bodied warriors, all descended from Jacob and his twelve sons, the twelve tribes of Israel. What a legacy, a Godly legacy.

I am a story person. I have to understand the big picture or epic story that I am a part of in order to keep trudging along in the daily grind. We are all part of God’s story, and we each have a unique part in that story, not the least of which is to continue the legacy.

This weekend I celebrated two lives that have done their part in the story to continue the legacy. My father, Michael J. Dobra, who celebrated his 60th birthday last week, and my grandmother-in-law, Elizabeth Hoff, who went to be with the Lord on her 62nd wedding anniversary.

I thank God for them and their faithfulness. I pray that their children and grandchildren will pick up the torch and continue the legacy. “May the Lord bless you and protect you; the Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; the Lord look with favor on you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:22-27). In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.

The Romans 15:4 Project is providing the web hosting for Pastor Lipscomb, and I pray God blesses his efforts and uses the Cornerstone Vocational Center to reach youth in our community and give them hope, purpose, and eternity! Visit them at CVC-PEORIA.ORG

Could you please help me offset the costs of the web hosting?

There are two areas of focus where I could use your help:

Web hosting and technical services for ministries:
The advancement of ministry and Kingdom focused websites. By blogging about and linking to other Christian ministry sites, they are given higher search engine rankings. One of my hopes and prayers is that when someone does an internet search for topics like Jesus or abortion that the top ten websites listed in search engine results would be Christian based!
    - Romans 15:4 Project Business Research Project: Can blogs be effective ministry tools?

    Outreach, teaching and discipleship:
There are over 40 subscribers to alerts and weekly updates, over 20 participants in the 2007 Bible Challenge, several Prayer Team members, and a daily average of over 30 visitors to the blog. Praise God! I have had some great conversations with self described existentialists, nihilists, and pro-abortionists as well as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. I pray God uses these conversations and sometimes difficult topics to reach people with His message of love, salvation, and eternal life in Jesus Christ.

See my post “2 Years Blogging” for more Romans 15:4 Project details and links to resources that fit into the two areas of focus.

What is the cost of this project:

    - $ 100, cvc-peoria.org domain name (5 years)
    - $ 100, cybermick.com domain renewal (5 years)
    - $ 30, anti-virus software renewal (1 year)
    - $ 60, anti-spam software renewal (1 year)
    - $ 160, Chaplain Dues ( 1 year)
    - $ 145, Training: Willow Creek Leadership Summit
    - $2600, Web Development: server hardware, software, and development time

    $ 3195.00 Total Goal!

That’s a big goal, but it would be to God’s glory! The immediate need is to recover the cost of the two domain names, and get the server up to date on anti-virus and anti-spam software. That Others May Live!

God bless America’s fallen heroes that have given their all that others may live!

It is hard here at home in comfort and busy with life to think of the courage it would take to set aside our personal desires and comforts so that others may live even though we might die. This is the extraordinary courage and dedication found among America’s fighting forces.

The next time you see someone with an anti war sign remember what Ronald Reagan said:

You and I know and do not believe that life is so dear and peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery.

If nothing is worth dying for, when did this begin?

Should Moses have told the children of Israel to live in slavery under the pharaohs?

Should Christ have refused the cross?

Should the patriots of Concord Bridge have thrown down their guns and refused to fire the shot heard round the world?

    - Ronald Reagan

And remember our fallen heroes, real heroes that put freedom and the lives of their comrades above their own. Like the story of Jason Dean Cunningham of Carlsbad, New Mexico, as told by Jeff Emanuel at Family Security Matters. (full story here)
Cunningham worked feverishly to treat the wounded Rangers and aviators, doing so in the back of the downed Chinook helicopter until it caught fire and became the target of increasingly accurate enemy mortar fire. Making the decision to move his patients, Cunningham crossed the line of fire seven separate times while successfully transporting them to higher ground – then was forced to move them twice more to avoid the enemy fire raining down on their static, vulnerable casualty collection points. Finally, just after midnight, after so much success defying enemy fire to move and treat his patients, Cunningham’s luck ran out, and he was shot in the abdomen just below his protective vest. According to the Air Force Times, “Cunningham must have known he was in serious trouble. But despite his worsening condition, he continued to treat patients and advise others on how to care for the critically wounded. One of the two bloodpacks he had brought [and which he was directly responsible for PJs being able to carry] saved a badly wounded Ranger. The medics gave the other packet to Cunningham himself, whose life was slowly flowing out in a red stream onto the white snow.”

. . . Every wounded man he treated survived the encounter, and for his extraordinary heroism and gallant action in living the Pararescue motto (“That Others May Live”), he was posthumously awarded the Air Force Cross, the second-highest award that the USAF offers. According to the citation, “As a result of [Cunningham’s] extraordinary heroism, his team returned 10 seriously wounded personnel to life-saving medical care.” (Please read full story here)
God bless and keep Pararescueman Cunningham!

It is my duty as a Pararescueman to save life and to aid the injured. I will be prepared at all times to perform my assigned duties quickly and efficiently, placing these duties before personal desires and comforts. These things I do, "That Others May Live."

And remember those that have given their lives for yours!

Find some way during this season of remembrance, May – July, to thank a military service member or veteran, and to remember those that have fallen.

May 19th is Armed Forces Day. President Dwight Eisenhower said, "It is fitting and proper that we devote one day each year to paying special tribute to those whose constancy and courage constitute one of the bulwarks guarding the freedom of this nation and the peace of the free world."

The Battle Hymn of the Republic
Text, Julia Ward Howe • Music, William Steffe, Arr. Wilhousky

    Verse 1
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He has loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword
    His truth is marching on.

    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    His truth is marching on.

    Verse 2
I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps
    His day is marching on.

    Refrain

    Verse 3
I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnish`d rows of steel,
"As ye deal with my contemners, So with you my grace shall deal;"
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel
    Since God is marching on.

    Refrain

    Verse 4
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!
    Our God is marching on.

    Refrain

Convert Or Die – Islamic Necromongers

Can a movie, The Chronicles of Riddick, teach us about our current day conflict?

There is a point in the movie when the Necromongers, followers of a dark religion, have conquered a planet and demand the citizens convert to the Necromonger way or die. (PluggedIn)

Is this really so far from the truth? Are we so conditioned by this type of morally ambiguous media that we can not see the reality of it in our world?

A recent REAL example of what I mean, “Christians in Charsadda, a town in North-West Frontier Province in Pakistan, have been warned that if they do not convert to Islam by 17 May they will face ‘dire consequences and bomb explosions’, Christian Today has learned.”
“Christians have 10 Days to Convert to Islam in Pakistan”. Christian Today. Posted: May 15, 2007.

I could site many other specific incidences of this type of “convert or die” Islamic activity. You can read other posts about Islam here.

It is the reality you don’t hear from our mainstream media too often. I wonder if the fear of terror has already censored them?

“Do we now have a politically-correct new word to use for avowed terrorists? Are they no longer to be called what they truly are but, to be referred to as ‘romantics?’”
“Left Works to Change Image of Fort Dix Six” by Sher Zieve, Family Security Matters.

My prayer: If you are not a part of Islam, I pray you will be informed and that God would protect your household. If you are a member of Islam, I pray God would open your eyes to see the evil that has deceived you, and that you may turn from it and find the true Prince of Peace whose tomb is empty! Whose greatest commands to us were to love God and love each other as ourselves (including our enemies!). Jesus has risen to free us from the bondage of sin and religious legalism! Jesus has risen so that all who voluntarily and sincerely believe in Him will have eternal life! Flee the darkness and turn to the light! This is my prayer for you in Jesus Christ’s name – Amen.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Is anyone else as confused as I am? I just can’t seem to find the peace in Islam.

“The bodies of seven [beheaded] Christian workers were recovered in Parang town where they were kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf Muslim extremists.” (VOM)

The former President of Iran, Mohammad Khatami, is quoted as saying, recently, “We cannot and must not use the name of God, the name of all perfection and generosity and beauty and truth, as a password for war and hate.”
Pope Meets Former Iranian President to Ease Islamic Relations”, by Daniel Blake. Christian Today. May 6, 2007.

But the facts seem to say something completely opposite:

Palestinian TV using Mickey Mouse character to teach children hatred and death.
“. . . a Mickey Mouse-type character leading 5 and 6 year-old children in chants of ‘Kill the Jews’ and ‘Kill the Americans.’ Then ‘Mickey’ the jihadist led the children in drills, including the pretend throwing of hand grenades and the mock firing of machine guns.” And American tax payers help support the Palestinian Authority!
‘Mickey’ Joins The Islamofascists” by Gary Bauer, American Family Values. Emailed May 7, 2007.

30 attacks, 200 innocent people EVERY WEEK since September 11th.
“Since 9/11, CAIR has not even bothered to acknowledge – much less condemn – over 99% of the bloody acts of deadly terror that are meted out on the world in the cause of Islam. Not including the 200,000 Darfurians lost to the Janjaweed Jihad, the Religion of Peace has stabbed, blasted, hacked, stoned or shot to death close to 200 innocent people in 30 attacks, on average, each week since September 11th, yet CAIR has declined specifically to denounce all but a tiny handful.”
The Self Absorbed Imperialists of Islam”, by Glen Reinsford, April 30, 2007.

Yet we celebrate their culture above our own!
“. . . Islam and all-things-Muslim are now not only being accommodated but, apparently revered and placed above other religions—by members of our politically-correct society.
Lewiston School Plays Down Muslim Ham Incident”, by Sher Zieve, April 28, 2007.

And still the threat of terror in America is real!
“MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. — At least five people were arrested on charges they plotted to attack the Fort Dix Army base and ‘kill as many soldiers as possible’, federal authorities said Tuesday.”
At Least 5 Arrested in Alleged Fort Dix Murder Plot”. FOX News. May 8, 2007

I must be slow, because I just don’t understand it. I like how Gary Bauer sums it up, “We can and will continue to have the debate about whether Islam is a ‘religion of peace’ or not. But here’s the bottom line: self-described Islamists are at war with us. They have killed us and are planning to kill more of us in the name of their faith. I welcome every Muslim who wants to join us and fight these thugs – I hope many of them will. But, in the meantime, we have to clear the cob webs out of our head and get on with the business of defeating these murderers. How were these six [Fort Dix Jihadist] men radicalized? What mosque did they attend and what was being taught there?” (End of Day Report 5-9-07)

My prayer: If you are not a part of Islam, I pray you will be informed and that God would protect your household. If you are a member of Islam, I pray God would open your eyes to see the evil that has deceived you, and that you may turn from it and find the true Prince of Peace whose tomb is empty! Whose greatest commands to us were to love God and love each other. Jesus has risen to free us from the bondage of sin and religious legalism! Jesus has risen so that all who voluntarily believe in Him will have eternal life! Flee the darkness and turn to the light! This is my prayer for you in Jesus Christ’s name – Amen.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

“History abounds with stories of courageous clergy leading the fight against fascist movements. This time, as Islamofascism challenges us all, we must be ready to stand with our religious leaders.”
Does Any of Us – Even Our Clergy – Have the Moral Courage to Fight Radical Islam?”. By MacAllen, Susan. Family Security Matters. Posted: January 29, 2007:

Thousands of Deadly Islamic Terror Attacks Since 9/11

    Bookstore Promotion

A resource for you, a resource for me!

I haven't needed to directly ask for help, yet. I would like to use this post to promote the Romans 15:4 Project Bookstore.

I am preparing to provide free web hosting for at least one local ministry this summer, and am talking with two others that are interested. I would like to offset those costs and raise money for school and ministry training this summer.

I hope the bookstore can be a resource for you and me! Thank you. - Mick, Founder and Chaplain the Romans 15:4 Project.

    Mid-Week Devotional - Luke 5:18-19

    Read: Luke 5:17 – 6:11

    Scripture

    Luke 5:18-19

Some men came carrying a paralytic on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.” (NIV)

Just then some men came, carrying on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed. They tried to bring him in and set him down before Him. Since they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the roof tiles into the middle of the crowd before Jesus.” (HCSB)

    Observation

These men had great faith in Jesus! They wanted to help their friend and had faith that Jesus could do it! They went so far as climbing up to the roof, making a hole in it and lowering their paralyzed friend down to Jesus!

    Application

What faith! Oh that I could have that kind of faith! And Jesus saw their faith by their actions and forgave and healed the paralyzed man (v. 5:20-24).

What priority is your personal faith? Do you seek Jesus first and foremost in your life? What about for your friends, Christians and non-Christians alike? How hard are you willing to work to bring them before our Savior?

Do our actions reflect our faith? Not for earning any favor, but a true, from the depths of our hearts, faith and yearning for Jesus!

    Prayer

Heavenly Father, I have faith that you are the Maker of heaven and earth, that you have provided salvation and a renewed relationship with your creation through Jesus, and that all wounds can be healed through Him. I pray, Lord, that you would fill my heart with a faith that would lead to action and a passionate desire to seek you always, for myself and those around me. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.

Public School Outreach – Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Don’t give up on the students, teachers, and coaches in our public schools.

What can you possibly do to help? You can support the Fellowship of Christian Athletes!

My recent posts about the state of America’s public schools may have you thinking I want to abandon them all together (1, 2, 3). You couldn’t be more wrong!

It is up to individual families to decide what is best for their children, and I made it clear in past posts (1, 2, 3) that I am looking into alternatives to government schools. But, I am not abandoning the children that are in public schools!

It is clear that there is a spiritual and cultural battle being waged against America’s children in the school systems (1, 2, 3), and I intend to continue to fight for them by supporting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes!

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes and our Greater Peoria Area representative, Cole Espenschied, are on the front lines of this battle. I think the only way to change course isn’t more spending, but changing the hearts and minds of the students, instilling purpose and values. Giving them the hope and purpose found through Christ Jesus the way our founding fathers intended it.

Cole is on the front lines winning back the hearts and minds of our community’s youth. He is developing coaches and student leaders with integrity, hope, and purpose, and he is giving the glory to God. Please help support this invaluable ministry. It is an important way to keep America and our local communities strong! We can overcome our enemies (crime, hatred, violence, drugs, etc…) and be a strong community if we teach our children the good news of Jesus Christ and develop them as leaders to impact our communities and nation for good.

From Cole’s 2006 Year End Update:
Within the last few months, 4 new campus ministries, and 1 new coaches huddle have been added. The added campus ministries are at Pekin H.S., Lewistown H.S., Manual H.S., and Bradley University. 20 coaches attended the first Coaches Huddle Meeting at Peoria Christian Schools. This huddle is open to all coaches from around the area. We now have 2 coaches huddles meeting each week in the area.

    One month down! Great job!

I just want to reiterate that you should not get discouraged if you’re behind at this point. Just pick up fresh with Exodus 37-40 this weekend and keep running the race to win! Don’t listen to the voices of discouragement; instead listen to the voice of Truth that this is for God’s glory!

    Sunday: Exodus 37-40
    Monday: Leviticus 1-3
    Tuesday: Leviticus 4-6
    Wednesday: Leviticus 7-9
    Thursday: Leviticus 10-12
    Friday: Leviticus 13-15
    Saturday: Leviticus 16-18

“The professor maintained that biblical illiteracy is ‘a universal and growing problem’ among students and churches, citing the trend toward a therapeutic emphasis in preaching as part of the problem. . . ‘Knowing the eternal truths of the Bible is the responsibility of every Christian,’ said AFA founder Don Wildmon, ‘not just pastors and teachers.’” (Murphree: Perspectives: Bible study made easy)

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
