Mid-Week Devotional - Luke 3:19-20

Read: Luke 3:1 – 4:13

Scripture

Luke 3:19-20

But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done, Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.” (NIV)

But Herod the tetrarch, being rebuked by him about Herodias, his brother's wife, and about all the evil things Herod had done, added this to everything else—he locked John up in prison.” (HCSB)

Observation

First, Luke firmly establishes the place and time in history by naming these historical people (v. 3:1-2).

John does not withhold his righteous convictions and exhortations of Herod’s evil deeds and adulterous relationship with his sister-in-law.

Herod is the Tetrarch, a Roman political office, or ruler of Galilee.

John’s steadfast hold on what is right in God’s eyes lands him in prison, and eventually costs him his life (Matthew 14:8-12).

Application

“Why do you think Jesus’ eleven disciples could go out and change the world, yet nearly one billion believers today seem to be so ineffective?” (Laan)

Do we have the courage to hold to biblical truth? Do we have the courage to hold a righteous conviction?

If a civic leader, that has proclaimed to be a follower of Jesus Christ, commits evil, say lying and adultery, would we be willing to hold them accountable? Or would we ignore it in order to avoid the tension of being criticized and called judgmental or even possibly losing our ministry or church’s tax exempt status?

Is our comfort and avoidance of tension more important than God’s righteous truth?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, you are a righteous judge. Lord, you will make all things right. Lord, grant me courage today to not be judgmental, but to stand firm on Your Holy Word and grant me righteous convictions. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.

Fetal Farming: When Life Has No Value (Update)

This is an update to my original post, “When Life Has No Value!”, concerning the investigation of babies being stolen from their mothers after birth and being harvested for stem cells in the Ukraine.

“Evidence from a video obtained by the BBC points to the stomach-churning possibility that healthy babies born in a Ukrainian maternity hospital were taken [from] their mothers and then murdered so that large amounts of stem cells could be harvested from their brains and bone marrow” (Grace).

More details of the evidence are being released. The hospital continues to deny the allegations.

We need absolute ethical standards in regard to human life. The horror of the devaluing of humanity from secular science, evolution, and godlessness is becoming a reality:

“Pictures from the autopsies reveal tiny dismembered bodies with missing organs and brains. Since dismemberment of bodies is not a standard post-mortem practice, it is likely the babies were harvested for the high amounts of stem cells in their brains and bone marrow” (Grace).

No Ethical Clarity + Love of Money – God = Harvesting babies for stem cells!

God forgive us. I pray, Lord, that you awaken the Saints in America to fight for the value of life and to fight for those who can’t defend themselves. Thank you, God, for your Son, Jesus Christ, who died that we might live! His life, death, and resurrection are a testimony to our value in Your eyes. Thank You!

"At the most basic level, to speak of Wilberforce is to speak of biblical worldview in action. When Wilberforce came to Christ early in his political career, he thought about leaving Parliament and public life altogether. Thankfully, William Pitt—who went on to become Great Britain’s youngest prime minister—convinced him otherwise. Pitt wrote to Wilberforce: 'Surely the principles as well as the practice of Christianity are simple and lead not to meditation only, but to action.'” (Colson) Go see Amazing Grace the movie opening 2/23/2007

"And for the rest of his life, Wilberforce’s Christianity meant action. His fiercely unpopular crusade against the slave trade consumed his health and cost him politically—but he could not stand idly by and see the imago Dei, the image of God, enslaved and abused in the holds of ships. He endured verbal assaults and was even challenged to a duel by an angry slave-ship captain." (Colson)

Expose Kids To Real Life Heroes

How awesome! This story made my heart leap for joy!

“Just like President Bush, pilot Jeff Goodale fielded some hard questions recently about the war in Iraq. . .”

“These questions didn't come from hard-nosed reporters or even skeptical congressmen, but rather from curious kindergartners and first-graders at L.E. Starke Primary School” (Zwicky).

BRAVO ZULU to Jeff and to Principle Fitzanko who had this to say, “’I think it's real important that our kids get an opportunity to experience the real heroes in our country, These are kids' parents - fathers and mothers - who are leaving their homes to go serve our country. We try to bring in all kinds of role models. When it can be a parent of a Starke student, that's even better.’”

This makes may heart leap for these reasons:

- Great reporting by Elise Zwicky. Telling the story of America’s local home town heroes and how they are an integral part of our community.

- Great job by Principle Fitzanko for actually teaching our children!

- Great job by Jeff Goodale, who, I will brag, happens to be my brother-in-law, for finding an appropriate way to teach our children the reality of the world they live in.

- And a great job overall for keeping it real and not using our children and schools for politicizing the war that we are in!

Well done. We need more family and civic leaders like these! And if they are out there, and I’m sure they are, we need more journalists to brag about their good work!

God bless you all.

Mid-Week Devotional - Luke 2:42

Read: Luke 2

Scripture

Luke 2:42

“When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom.” (NIV)

“When He was 12 years old, they went up according to the custom of the festival.” (HCSB)

Observation

Luke chapter 2 highlights Jesus’ early development. Jesus was following the Mishna, the educational process for Jewish boys (Laan, 28).

Jesus is approaching the stage, age 13, when boys were to begin adulthood and the fulfilling of the commandments.

Application

What kind of student of God’s Word are you? Jesus obviously made an impression (v. 2:47). Could you be ready to fulfill the commandments?

Should Christ’s followers have an educational process? Consider this:

Deut. 6:4-7 says we should keep God’s Word in our hearts. Do you regularly memorize scripture?

Matt. 5:17-19 says we should keep even the least of God’s commands.

And Mark 12:30 says we are to love God with our hearts, souls, minds, and strength.

Sounds like a process to me.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank you for Your Word. I pray your Spirit would guide me in all truth. I Pray that I have the strength and heart to continue to love you with my mind. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.

Becoming A Disciple Reflection

A reflection from “Faith Lessons – in the dust of the rabbi – becoming a disciple” by Ray Vander Laan with Stephen & Amanda Sorenson.

“In what ways do our lifestyle choices and our culture undermine a total commitment to discipleship?”

Great question! We are unwilling to give up our STUFF!

At least I know that at times I am. All of our stuff becomes a distraction and can border on becoming an idol.

“What do you think we can do to reclaim our passion for God?”

I think we need to turn toward simplicity. We should be willing to live without our stuff and be wholly dependent on God and His Word.

Practice compassion and hospitality. Do not conform the unbiblical cultural norms (Romans 12:2), and make reading and memorizing God’s Word top priority in our lives.

Chickens More Important Than Children Says Congress

If our current congress is representative of America, then America is sick.

Pro-life conservatives wanted to pass a law that would have prevented adults other than parents from transporting minor girls across state lines to get an abortion in violation of state parental notification laws.

You would want to know if the adult that got your underage daughter pregnant intended to take her out of state for an abortion, wouldn’t you? You would want to know if your minor daughter was going to have a medical procedure that is very dangerous and could lead to infertility and even death, wouldn’t you? Yes, it makes complete sense to me.

But, as Gary Bauer points out, “Senate liberals filibustered the bill at the last minute in order to prevent it from reaching the president’s desk.”

You know what cause the House liberals took up? “the House Judiciary Committee was debating a bill to ban the transportation of animals across state lines for the purposes of animal fights.”

How can our American Values be so seriously messed up?

But wait! It gets worse! “Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) tried to attach the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act as an amendment to the bill. Rep. Sensenbrenner commented, ‘I recognize we are meeting here today to consider a bill to protect chickens, but isn’t protecting our nation’s young women … equally, if not more important, than our dinner entrĂ©e?’ Unfortunately, the Democrat majority tabled Sensenbrenner’s commonsense amendment.”

America is very sick.

God forgive us. God I pray you would lead America to repentance. Give us leaders that value life, that cherish every person and would fight for their dignity and well being above their own personal goals and ambitions for power.

And certainly, abortion is the social problem of America. “Abortion kills over 3200 Americans per day, and 1.2 million per year. A child is killed by abortion every 22 seconds in America. Over 45 million Americans have lost their lives to abortion since 1973. 50 million babies are killed worldwide every year. This crisis deserves the utmost attention of our policy makers, and leaders” (ObamaNation.com: “Unbelievably, Obama continues to refuse to address the disproportionate killing of African American babies in their mother's womb. Obama even supports the killing of born and partially born children”).

Obama Legislating Immorality Instead of Morality

Reading Senator Obama’s Presidential announcement was, at first, very exciting. My heart leapt to hear a politician bring his faith into play and line up to answer the hard questions about how he can support same sex marriage, and abortion, including denial of medical aid to a child that survives an abortion.

But many words later he never really did answer those questions. Oh, he was smooth, but fell short of an actual answer.

Instead, what I understood was an explanation that he wouldn’t legislate morality. But then turns and says he would legislate the moral imperative of charity.

Ok, this can be a bit confusing, and I’m sure that may have been the intent, will he or won’t he legislate morality? So let’s break it down:

Sanctity of life: not a moral imperative worth legislating!
- Please explain to me how letting a child die without medical aid is not a moral imperative? Please! "even on the Born-Alive [Infants Protection] Act, I was appalled that [ Obama ] would deny medical assistance to a child that survived an abortion" (qtd. in Brown).

Sanctity of marriage: not a moral imperative worth legislating!

Charity: moral imperative worth legislating.

My understanding of Obama’s idea of charity: take money from one person and give it to another at the “governments” discretion. In other words, wealth redistribution.

Oh friends, it gets much worse than that. He recently voted to extend Social Security benefits to illegal aliens, law breaking non-U.S. Citizens that have never paid a cent into the social security program! Hello! Social Security and Medicaid are going to be broke in 20 years as it is!
Correction: This source is a little bit misleading. It's not false, but not entirely true. The bills and the meaning of the vote (to table the bill) were very confusing. However, the analysis stands as is based on the fact that every government managed social entitlement program is going broke, do we really think they can manage new ones any better?

My understanding of Obama’s idea of charity: reward and encourage lawlessness at the taxpayers expense. In other words, theft, debt, and anarchy!

Oh friends, it gets much worse than that. He, a liberal democrat, is preaching to those, Christian conservatives, that already far exceed the liberal understanding of charity. Because, you see, “Conservatives give 30 percent more of their income to charity than liberals, despite, on average, making slightly less money” (qtd. in Bauer).

Oh friends, he is good. He is a master wordsmith. As I was reading his speech I felt charged and excited. It wasn’t until I went back over it to find where I missed his actual answers that I realized I had been duped! There were no answers. There were only words with no substance or value.

And the only thing it appears that Senator Obama will support are immorality and lawlessness and he will support them with your paycheck! You better go get a second job.

Obama vs Lincoln: America’s Weakened Morality

Can we not find leaders of high character and moral resolve?

Senator Obama wants to abandon the Iraqi people. He even set a date, March 31, 2008, to which the Australian Prime Minister said, “that al Qaeda must be praying for Senator Obama's victory in the Presidential election of that year” (TCV).

It is most ironic that this “rock star” Illinois Presidential candidate is so far off course from the Illinois President that led this nation to free the oppressed people of his time.

I think Senator Lieberman puts it best:

“Nearly a century and a half ago, an American President wrestled with just this problem. It was in the midst of a terrible war, a civil war in which hundreds of thousands of Americans were fighting and dying to secure the freedom of millions long and cruelly denied it. Lincoln said at Gettysburg: ‘We here highly resolve.’ It was a message of resolution, of steadfastness in the face of adversity, of hope over despair, and of confidence in the cause of freedom which is America’s eternal cause. Today, in the depths of a terrible war, on the brink of a decisive battle for Baghdad, let us have a serious debate about where we stand and where we must go in Iraq.” (qtd in Bauer, emphasis added)

Ironic that Obama does not have the same resolve to stand against evil and oppression, or just plain sad because so many people are falling for his sweet words. I think President Lincoln had a higher moral clarity and resolve.

To a Christian brother I say:

learn to do right!
Seek justice,
encourage the oppressed.
Defend the cause of the fatherless,
plead the case of the widow.”
(Isaiah 1:17)

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.”
(Proverbs 31:8)

Our government’s primary purpose is to secure our freedom and protect against evil that would take it away. I don’t think Senator Obama has the backbone to lead this country in our time.

“During World War II, the entire country stood together and made the sacrifices necessary actually to win” (Taylor). Now all we get from the next generation are anti-American defeatists.

There was once a stark warning given to America that “’the Huns and Vandals who ravaged Rome came from without her borders, while your Huns and Vandals will be engendered within your own country and by your own institutions’” (qtd. in Galloway, 1898). How sad that such a prediction seems to be coming true among our media and political elite.

America must find her moral compass and redirect course for True North! The American people must demand better!

God I pray you forgive America and give us leaders with moral clarity and earnest resolve to stand against the evil that would oppress and kill the innocent.

Legacy of Destiny or Birth Dearth

How Many Children Should We Have?

“Current birth rates could produce Muslim domination”

Do you think God has good reason for His children to go forth and multiply?

“A pro-family organization has done extensive research into birth rates around the world and has concluded that if the Western world wants to survive, it better start having more children. The Population Research Institute (PRI) says virtually every Western or Westernized nation on the planet is slowly dying off because birth rates have fallen below the 2.1-child-per-woman replacement level” (Groening, emphasis added).

Parts of Europe may become an Islamic state in a generation or two without even a battle simply because non-muslims have stopped having children.

Let's do the math:
In Europe, 1.2 or 1.3 children per couple, that's 2 people have 1 child then grow old and die, and the world is one person lighter. In some regions the birth rate is as low as 1.1! (Sheahan)

In America 2 people have 2 children then grow old and die, add in infant and child mortality, and the population is declining.

But is this biblical, or based on personal selfishness and cultural influence?

Disclaimer: This is not a judgment! For those I know that have already stopped at two children, I’m working this out for myself and for those that come after me. It is a scriptural application. I used to be completely opposed to this idea! What a 180 degree change of opinion God has made in me! (Romans 12:2, 2 Tim. 3:16)

Here is something serious to consider: America kills around 1,200,000 (that’s 1.2 Million) fetuses every year because of a woman’s right to choose abortion. But, how many rights do women have under Islamic rule?

If feminists cared about long term women’s rights they would join arms with the Catholics and war against birth control, and celebrate the birth of every child. They might consider working to preserve the country that not only allows them to vote and work on equal terms with men but also doesn’t force them to wear a veil.

A civilization really does need citizens who care about its future; that means family life and intentional live births. (Sheahan)

There are serious problems in Europe and America that can be solved by simply following God’s design for marriage and child bearing. “the current situation begs a pragmatic solution: ‘If you don't want the world to turn into Saudi Arabia, maybe people other than Muslims need to start having some kids at the rate the Muslims are having kids’” (Groening).

So, how many children should we have? Here is just a small sampling of the Scriptural mandate:

God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’”
Genesis 1:28

And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
‘Our sister, may you increase
to thousands upon thousands;
may your offspring possess
the gates of their enemies.’”
Genesis 24:60

And God said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body.’”
Genesis 35:11

But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites
Exodus 1:12

3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him.
4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior

are sons born in one's youth.
5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.

They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their enemies in the gate.
(One of my favorites!) Psalm 127:3-5

What kind of legacy will you leave in the world, a diminishing one or a vibrant growing and Godly one?

BTW, my wife is due with our second child in early October. Praise God!

Weekly ReCap - 02-09-2007

I think people often fear God and the teachings of Jesus because they know justice will one day be served.

The wicked return to the grave,
all the nations that forget God.

But the needy will not always be forgotten,

nor the hope of the afflicted ever perish.

GFA Prayer Request – Women Missionaries Beaten

Passing along this Emergency Update from Gospel For Asia:

Hindu fundamentalists attacked four women who serve as Gospel for Asia missionaries in Haryana, India. The attack occurred on Sunday, February 4.

You can read more about it here: http://www.gfa.org/newsupdate020707

The attack is a shocking reminder that these anti-Christian groups will do anything to stop the spread of the Gospel. It also helps us understand that the true enemy is not just a group of human beings. The Bible clearly tells us that "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12).

Thank you for joining me in prayer for these women who were injured for the sake of Christ and for those who carried out the attacks. The only hope we have of seeing lasting change is through the love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Yours for the unreached,
K.P. Yohannan

Mid-Week Devotional - Luke 1:43

Read: Luke 1:39-80

Scripture

Luke 1:43

But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (NIV)

How could this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (HCSB)

Observation

John the Baptist’s mother, Elizabeth, knows by the Holy Spirit that Mary is pregnant with our Lord. Elizabeth knows that Mary has been blessed because of her faith (v. 1:45). Mary recognizes that she will be known by all generations, but not because of who she is, a humble slave of God’s, but because of who God is (v. 1:48-49).

Application

Because Mary conceived the God child by the Holy Spirit (and it should be noted that Luke, the author of this Gospel, was a doctor), she is the mother of “God with us”, Immanuel! I think that protestant Christians do not think about Mary’s role often enough, perhaps rightly out of fear of worshipping or idolizing Mary above God. But we would be wise to give this humble virgin the reverence she is due for her faith and obedience (v. 1:38).

Why is Mary blessed and why will her name be known by all generations? Because God has done great things and His name is holy! (v. 1:48-49)

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Mighty One, Your Name is holy above all others and You alone are God. I praise you that you exalt the humble. I praise you for Mother Mary and I pray that I might find strength in her faith and humble obedience. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.

Brad Carter for Peoria City Council – Priorities

Justice, Righteousness, Honor, Civility, Safety, and Faith are the soil that success will grow best in. Create a safe environment and the human spirit will flourish.

I think Peoria needs to hear that crime and drug dealing do not play in Peoria before we here that the tax payers are going to fund any more “pet” projects like money losing health clubs or hotels!

Let faith based and citizen outreach programs heal the city’s moral problems unhindered, and let the tax payers fund the infrastructure that provides a safe environment for all. That’s my opinion.

It sounds like Brad Carter has his priorities right.

Take a look at his website and consider a vote for Brad Carter for Peoria City Council.

“Illinois Suburb’s Murder Rate Comparable to Iraq’s”

Media is soft spoken on our cities criminals while promoting liberal agenda.

Maybe if Main Stream Media were to spend more time reporting murder rates and criminal activities in our own cities we would have more moral clarity in fighting a war against terrorists that are out to destroy our way of life.

“The unsolved murders of Rolando Becerra and Brentell Faulkner on Sunday have taken Harvey's already high death rate to an unprecedented level. . . with just 30,000 residents, that translates to 208 murders per 100,000 residents. . . The equivalent figure for Iraq last year, according to Iraqi government figures, is 171 murders per 100,000 residents, although inside Baghdad the figure may be three times as high” (nbc5.com).

That should help put things in perspective the next time one of the talking figure heads mentions the Iraqi death toll just before or after a piece critical of the war in Iraq (or supportive of a liberal abandonment agenda). Not to mention the fact that the Iraq death toll is still hundreds of thousands away from Sadam’s.

Do they need the gruesome headlines to keep profits up? Well then, “Killed this year were Andre Buchanan, who was thrown, bound and gagged, from a third-floor window; 77-year-old William Stringfellow, beaten to death at his Western Avenue home; and 20-year-old Lionel Gore, who was stabbed to death at his Turlington Avenue home.”

The lawlessness continues. We must pursue and punish criminals and demand a certain minimal requirement of civil behavior in order to keep our streets safe, and that includes media representation.

Weekly ReCap - 02-02-2007

And whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.

Militant Buddhist Monks?

America has a pretty skewed understanding of Buddhism since the Americanization of many Buddhist practices into new age and post modern spiritual movements. (As well as other eastern mysticism practices, see Yoga link below.)

When you think of a Buddhist monk do you think of someone leading a military patrol whose goal is forced conversion to Buddhism? Well, it’s true.

“In Koh Kyi village, in Arakan State, a monk backed by the military burnt down the local church. In another state, 300 monks were allegedly sent by the regime to forcibly convert the populace, all of whom belonged to the Chin ethnic group, which is mostly Christian” (Pattisson, emphasis added).

If forced conversion didn’t mean torture and death, it might almost be comical. But, it’s worse than that. Once again we can see the dire threat of Christianity, the “very gentle” religion of love and voluntary conversion. In fact, it is such a threat that “The military regime in Burma is intent on wiping out Christianity in the country, according to claims in a secret document believed to have been leaked from a government ministry” (Pattison).

It is a testament to the truth of our savior Jesus Christ.

Now the good news. In a great article in the first quarter issue of Send! we learn about a lama (Buddhist religious teacher) that was beginning to realize the falsity of Buddhism.

He says, “’It seemed to me that to be a lama is to live the life of a beggar as well as a robber,’” after watching a senior lama perform religious rituals for a sick patron far in excess of what was needed in order to keep siphoning food and rice beer from the family.

But, “Today Panchu’s life has been radically transformed. He once drank heavily and would sometimes verbally and physically abuse his family members. Christ has set him free from these destructive habits” (GFA).

Praise God! And I continue to pray that He will open the eyes of more Buddhists to the darkness of their religion and to the eternal life of faith in Jesus Christ.

Prayer Team: Boldly Proclaim the Gospel

Boldly Proclaim the Gospel!

Boldly proclaim the Gospel in times of great joy as well as times of trouble.

Times are changing in Europe, Canada, and America. Proclaiming the truth of Scripture is becoming more difficult and culturally unacceptable. Most recently are concerns in Europe that new Sexual Orientation Regulations will discriminate against Christians as they have in Canada, “Christians have voiced their alarm at what affect their coming into being will have on their freedom to live according to their faith”, especially as hate laws are being stretched to include unpopular (subjectively considered hateful) speech (Mackay).

Case in point, 2/1/2007: a British Columbia City Council member is being forced to pay fines and make public apologies for saying “that homosexual acts were ‘not normal and not natural’” (Thomas), and 1/30/2007: Catholic adoption agencies in the U.K. will be forced to adopt to same-sex couples or shut down (Mackay).

It should be obvious that there is increasing hostility toward teachings of the Gospel. How will we react?

Devotion

It can be easy to let culture box in our faith. We can all to easily stay silent when speaking out becomes uncomfortable or even criminal. But remember Paul who said, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” (Romans 1:16)

Again we can learn from the early Church leaders and the Apostles. “Stephen ‘speaks to us above all of Christ, of Christ crucified and risen as the centre of history and of our life’” (Gold).

There is a point of tension we must remain in to work within and engage the culture, but we must also hold true to the Gospel and teachings of Scripture. Do not be ashamed of the Gospel and do not conform to the culture (Romans 12:2).

Prayer

Let us commit to at least a week of praying that all members of the body of Christ will have the courage to boldly proclaim the Gospel in all circumstances.

Heavenly Father, may the Cross ever be before me. Fill my heart and my thoughts with Christ so that every word may come from my love of Him. I pray that you would give every one of your children hope and courage that we may be ready to speak of you above all else no matter what circumstance we find ourselves in. The world needs your hope of Salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ as much as it ever has. It is in His name that I pray – Amen.
