There is a scary article in the June issue of American Family Association Journal detailing the “moral murkiness” of the Buster generation (those in their 20s and 30s) including those identified as born again Christians (Vitagliano).
A current theme I’ve had in many of my posts this year is the need to instill a Biblical Worldview in our children. If you leave the education and training of your children up to institutionalized public government education with only 1 hour a week at Sunday school, your children will become “of the world” rather than “of the Word”.
It seems to me that the fundamental place to return to God’s decrees is in the family. The World Congress of Families Warsaw Declaration states in part, “The natural family, creation of God, is the fundamental human community, based on the life-long marriage between a man and a woman, in which new individuals are conceived, born and raised.”
“Conceived, born and raised.” What is most scary about the article is that the born again Christian kids are sliding into a “hedonistic free-for-all” just as bad as non-Christians. What does this say about the Church (not an institution or denomination, but us, you and me, and all believers)? Why can’t the Church and Christian parents beat back the culture?
We must defend the family! The natural family, creation of God, is the best design for raising and equipping children. “A moral community in which young generations can grow, versus false ideologies propagating demoralization;” (Warsaw Declaration)
“‘Mom and hot apple pie have been replaced by institutional daycare centers and cold apple turnovers at McDonald's. . . As promising social and education programs have cratered along with promised noble deeds, [and] more sophisticated and determined evils proliferated, have we no place to turn?’ he asked rhetorically. ‘The family remains -- both the first and the most important social unit created by an all-wise, omniscient God.’” (Brown)
You may not be in the perfect situation. You may be a single parent or may need both incomes, there are exceptions. Seek the best possible solution for the right reasons, not for selfish or economic reasons, but for the best for your family. And always pray for God’s will and guidance in your family planning. And the Church should be there to help equip its parents and their children.
Making God’s Word central in our families “is critical because the Word alone enables your family to withstand the prevailing currents of an evil culture.” (“The Heart of Family Reformation” by Jim Elliff, Christian Worldview Network 5/24/2007)
