Obama vs Lincoln: America’s Weakened Morality

Can we not find leaders of high character and moral resolve?

Senator Obama wants to abandon the Iraqi people. He even set a date, March 31, 2008, to which the Australian Prime Minister said, “that al Qaeda must be praying for Senator Obama's victory in the Presidential election of that year” (TCV).

It is most ironic that this “rock star” Illinois Presidential candidate is so far off course from the Illinois President that led this nation to free the oppressed people of his time.

I think Senator Lieberman puts it best:

“Nearly a century and a half ago, an American President wrestled with just this problem. It was in the midst of a terrible war, a civil war in which hundreds of thousands of Americans were fighting and dying to secure the freedom of millions long and cruelly denied it. Lincoln said at Gettysburg: ‘We here highly resolve.’ It was a message of resolution, of steadfastness in the face of adversity, of hope over despair, and of confidence in the cause of freedom which is America’s eternal cause. Today, in the depths of a terrible war, on the brink of a decisive battle for Baghdad, let us have a serious debate about where we stand and where we must go in Iraq.” (qtd in Bauer, emphasis added)

Ironic that Obama does not have the same resolve to stand against evil and oppression, or just plain sad because so many people are falling for his sweet words. I think President Lincoln had a higher moral clarity and resolve.

To a Christian brother I say:

learn to do right!
Seek justice,
encourage the oppressed.
Defend the cause of the fatherless,
plead the case of the widow.”
(Isaiah 1:17)

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.”
(Proverbs 31:8)

Our government’s primary purpose is to secure our freedom and protect against evil that would take it away. I don’t think Senator Obama has the backbone to lead this country in our time.

“During World War II, the entire country stood together and made the sacrifices necessary actually to win” (Taylor). Now all we get from the next generation are anti-American defeatists.

There was once a stark warning given to America that “’the Huns and Vandals who ravaged Rome came from without her borders, while your Huns and Vandals will be engendered within your own country and by your own institutions’” (qtd. in Galloway, 1898). How sad that such a prediction seems to be coming true among our media and political elite.

America must find her moral compass and redirect course for True North! The American people must demand better!

God I pray you forgive America and give us leaders with moral clarity and earnest resolve to stand against the evil that would oppress and kill the innocent.

Unfortunately, we are currently mired in an existential crisis of our own. The war in Iraq has undermined the will to use military force, even when military force is necessary. Just because we did not find massive stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq does not mean Iran is benign. Yet, like the Western powers after World War I, we prefer watching as our enemies re-arm rather than stopping them when we can. The results, as they were in 1939, will be devastating.

All of which makes the presidential election of 2008 the most important election in recent memory. America teeters on the brink of a crippling European post-modernism.

The political embodiment of that post-modernism -- that nihilistic resignation -- is the modern Democratic Party. Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the Democrats' bright new star, is no more capable of global leadership than Jacques Chirac. Obama's politics of "understanding" dictates that evil cannot be fought -- it must be placated with psychobabble.

In his new forward to "Dreams From My Father," Obama writes, "I know, I have seen, the desperation and disorder of the powerless: how it twists the lives of children on the streets of Jakarta or Nairobi … how easily they slip into violence and despair. I know that the response of the powerful to this disorder -- alternating as it does between a dull complacency and, when the disorder spills out of its proscribed confines, a stead unthinking application of force, of … more sophisticated military hardware -- is inadequate to the task." This sounds like boilerplate rhetoric. It is not. It is the theory of appeasement, stated clearly and succinctly.
