Mid-Week Devotional - Luke 1:43

Read: Luke 1:39-80

Scripture

Luke 1:43

But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (NIV)

How could this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (HCSB)

Observation

John the Baptist’s mother, Elizabeth, knows by the Holy Spirit that Mary is pregnant with our Lord. Elizabeth knows that Mary has been blessed because of her faith (v. 1:45). Mary recognizes that she will be known by all generations, but not because of who she is, a humble slave of God’s, but because of who God is (v. 1:48-49).

Application

Because Mary conceived the God child by the Holy Spirit (and it should be noted that Luke, the author of this Gospel, was a doctor), she is the mother of “God with us”, Immanuel! I think that protestant Christians do not think about Mary’s role often enough, perhaps rightly out of fear of worshipping or idolizing Mary above God. But we would be wise to give this humble virgin the reverence she is due for her faith and obedience (v. 1:38).

Why is Mary blessed and why will her name be known by all generations? Because God has done great things and His name is holy! (v. 1:48-49)

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Mighty One, Your Name is holy above all others and You alone are God. I praise you that you exalt the humble. I praise you for Mother Mary and I pray that I might find strength in her faith and humble obedience. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray – Amen.
