How Many Children Should We Have?

“Current birth rates could produce Muslim domination”

Do you think God has good reason for His children to go forth and multiply?

“A pro-family organization has done extensive research into birth rates around the world and has concluded that if the Western world wants to survive, it better start having more children. The Population Research Institute (PRI) says virtually every Western or Westernized nation on the planet is slowly dying off because birth rates have fallen below the 2.1-child-per-woman replacement level” (Groening, emphasis added).

Parts of Europe may become an Islamic state in a generation or two without even a battle simply because non-muslims have stopped having children.

Let's do the math:
In Europe, 1.2 or 1.3 children per couple, that's 2 people have 1 child then grow old and die, and the world is one person lighter. In some regions the birth rate is as low as 1.1! (Sheahan)

In America 2 people have 2 children then grow old and die, add in infant and child mortality, and the population is declining.

But is this biblical, or based on personal selfishness and cultural influence?

Disclaimer: This is not a judgment! For those I know that have already stopped at two children, I’m working this out for myself and for those that come after me. It is a scriptural application. I used to be completely opposed to this idea! What a 180 degree change of opinion God has made in me! (Romans 12:2, 2 Tim. 3:16)

Here is something serious to consider: America kills around 1,200,000 (that’s 1.2 Million) fetuses every year because of a woman’s right to choose abortion. But, how many rights do women have under Islamic rule?

If feminists cared about long term women’s rights they would join arms with the Catholics and war against birth control, and celebrate the birth of every child. They might consider working to preserve the country that not only allows them to vote and work on equal terms with men but also doesn’t force them to wear a veil.

A civilization really does need citizens who care about its future; that means family life and intentional live births. (Sheahan)

There are serious problems in Europe and America that can be solved by simply following God’s design for marriage and child bearing. “the current situation begs a pragmatic solution: ‘If you don't want the world to turn into Saudi Arabia, maybe people other than Muslims need to start having some kids at the rate the Muslims are having kids’” (Groening).

And certainly, abortion is the social problem of America. “Abortion kills over 3200 Americans per day, and 1.2 million per year. A child is killed by abortion every 22 seconds in America. Over 45 million Americans have lost their lives to abortion since 1973. 50 million babies are killed worldwide every year. This crisis deserves the utmost attention of our policy makers, and leaders” (ObamaNation.com: “Unbelievably, Obama continues to refuse to address the disproportionate killing of African American babies in their mother's womb. Obama even supports the killing of born and partially born children”).

So, how many children should we have? Here is just a small sampling of the Scriptural mandate:

“God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’”
Genesis 1:28

“And they blessed Rebekah and said to her,
‘Our sister, may you increase
to thousands upon thousands;
may your offspring possess
the gates of their enemies.’”
Genesis 24:60

“And God said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body.’”
Genesis 35:11

“But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites”
Exodus 1:12

3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him.
4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are sons born in one's youth.
5 Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their enemies in the gate.
(One of my favorites!) Psalm 127:3-5

What kind of legacy will you leave in the world, a diminishing one or a vibrant growing and Godly one?

BTW, my wife is due with our second child in early October. Praise God!
